PodNote Help/Tutorial

What is PodNote?

PodNote is a simple utility for splitting text-based files into a size that is readable in the iPod Note Reader.

Features

Easy Splitting

When a file is split, the new files will be placed in a folder next to the original, with the same name as the original file and the word "split". You can copy this folder right to your iPod.

Note Hyperlinking

iPod Note Reader allows text files to contain hyperlinks to other files. Since your file may be split into many files, it is much easier to read when there are hyperlinks to the next file in the sequence. PodNote automatically adds a link to the previous file at the top of each individual file, and a link to the next file at the end of each. There is also a "home" link to take you back to the first file in the series.

Drag-and-Drop Files

When you drop a file on the PodNote window, the application checks if the file is too large for the iPod Note Reader. If it is too large, PodNote will split it into multiple files. You can also copy a file from Windows Explorer, and paste it on the Podnote window to trigger a split. In fact, PodNote doesn't even need to be running for this. Simply drag the file onto the PodNote desktop icon, and PodNote will automatically launch, split the file, and then quit again. Or you can copy the file (Ctrl-C when the file is selected, or right-click and select "Copy"). Next, paste the file on the PodNote desktop shortcut (Ctrl-V or right-click and select "Paste"). When PodNote opens, it will detect the file, and ask if you'd like it to be split. Choose "Yes" to split the file, "No" to ignore it and keep PodNote running, or "Cancel" to quit PodNote.

Paste Text

You can paste text directly from the clipboard (Ctrl-V) into the PodNote window, and it will automatically be turned into a new text file. The new file will also be checked for length, and split if necessary. You can also paste text by right-clicking on the PodNote window or the Podnote system tray icon and selecting "Paste Text". When you paste text, a window will open allowing you to name to new file. However, you can skip this window by holding down "shift" (i.e., Ctrl-Shift-V). The file will be named "New PodNote.txt". Pasting clipboard text is a very convenient way to extract portions of an email or webpage that you'd like to take with you.
